Concern as Germany cuts funds to agricultural research centres
Article Abstract:
Germany's Ministry for Economic Cooperation is to see its $18 million research portfolio halved over the period to 2004 as part of the government's austerity programme. The cuts in the research portfolio will include significant reductions in funding for six of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research's 16 institutes. They include the International Potato Institute in Peru, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics in India and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in Mexico City, Mexico.

Article Abstract:
The European Commission may back further schemes to retrain unemployed scientists, following the success of a project in former east Germany. The scheme could be expanded to other regions after 2000.
