NASA lines up for a bigger slice of the biological research pie
Article Abstract:
US space agency NASA could expand its research work beyond its traditional areas if it is successful in establishing its planned Astrobiology Institute. This organization, which has already attracted interest from many research groups, would be involved in the interdisciplinary study of life in the Universe. Based at the Ames Research Center outside San Francisco, CA, it would be a driving force behind the development of new techniques in scientific collaboration. It would have a budget of around $7 million for its first year, rising to $8 million in the following year and $10 million thereafter.

NASA urged to extend all solar satellites
Article Abstract:
Solar activity is set to become very interesting, and for this reason US space agency NASA should not abandon any of its eight satellites which are observing the Sun before the end of 2001, according to a panel of experts. The experts did not identify any redundancy or duplication among the Sun-watching missions, but did conclude that it should be possible to reduce the cost of spacecraft operations. An extensive Solar Maximum Campaign between 1998 and 2001 would cost an estimated $26 million.

NASA seeks a better, faster distribution of space data
Article Abstract:
NASA is urging scientists who use NASA equipment such as the Hubble Space Telescope to share their research data with the public and other researchers, within a proprietary data period of nine months. Both the political system and the public along with the scientists will benefit from NASA's research programs and missions. The team scientists must be economically equipped to refine the data to be presented for general distribution.
