Congress grabs eugenics common ground
Article Abstract:
Members of the International Congress of Genetics have warned that genetic testing must not be used as a tool to enforce public policy. The meeting agreed that the scientific community should be consulted by government on all issues related to genetics and says that the word 'eugenics' is being misused in scientific literature. The genetics issue has attracted much attention at the five-year conference because of the decision by China to adopt a eugenics law suggesting that people with genetic defects may be compulsorily sterilized if they marry.

Panel urges caution on genetic testing for mental disorders
Article Abstract:
The main bioethics advisory panel in Britain has warned against attempts to use genetic screening to predict susceptibility to common mental health disorders such as Alzheimer's disease or schizophrenia. Its report calls for regulations to replace to current voluntary constraints. The report may become part of a framework for more detailed discussions of technical developments by groups such as the Advisory Committee on Genetic Testing.

UK parliamentary panel calls for human genetics authority
Article Abstract:
Applications of human genetics should be regulated by a statutory body, according to recommendations of the UK House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology. The body would have many responsibilities, such as advising on ethical aspects of genetic screening and organizing companies providing genetic services. Reforms would be made in gene patents to limit misuse.
