Coupled major and trace elements as indicators of the extent of melting in mid-ocean-ridge peridotites
Article Abstract:
Research is presented describing how the depletion of major and trace elements indicates a sizable loss of basaltic melt, which subsequently forms the oceanic crust, in the Earth's mid-ocean-ridge peridotites. Using data collected on the central Indian ridge plus previously published data, the researchers develop a quantitative melting indicator for sub-oceanic mantle residues.

Recycled oceanic crust observed in 'ghost plagioclase' within the source of Mauna Loa lavas
Article Abstract:
An analysis of lavas from the 1868 eruption of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii reveals exotic, strontium-enriched melt inclusions in its olivines. Their trace-element patterns are similar to those of layered gabbros found in ophiolites.

Hot heads and cold tails
Article Abstract:
A report is presented of the discovery of highly primitive olivine in volcanic rocks forming the Etendeka basalts, part of the South Atlantic large igneous provinces. The significance of their presence is discussed.
