Crown jewel of the Caribbean: Glovers Reef Atoll is the focus of a new approach to coral-reef conservation
Article Abstract:
The Glovers Reef Atoll in the Caribbean near Belize has been designated as a protected marine reserve and the Wildlife Conservation Society has committed its energies to coral-reef research and conservation. The reserve covers about 260 square miles of sea and sea floor. Nearby Middle Cay island will house park headquarters, scientists, and research facilities. The reef makes up a diverse and fragile ecosystem supporting a variety of aquatic and terrestrial life.
