Debts and salaries tempt British graduates away from research
Article Abstract:
Many UK graduates are turning away from postgraduate training, particularly in the engineering and physical science, according to new government data. It is likely that the low PhD stipend and increasingly student debts are the cause. The mean debt of graduates is between 4,000 and 5,000 pounds sterling, according to the National Union of Students, and the removal of the maintenance grant at the end of 1999 will worsen the situation.
