Transgenic trials under pressure in Germany
Article Abstract:
A ban on all field experiments with genetically manipulated plants in Germany has been proposed by environmentalists following a report on experiments showing the spontaneous transfer of a gene from a transgenic oilseed rape hybrid into a closely related weed-like plant. BUND, the biggest environmental protection group in Germany, led the call for a ban on transgenic trials. The issue has exerted further pressure on German plant geneticists, whose crops are always attacked by activists. This explains why minimal research on molecular plant genetics is undertaken in the country compared with other European countries.

Germany follows Britain in dumping fast breeder
Article Abstract:
Germany has decided to stop funding the development of fast-breeder reactors after 1993, leaving France as the only government still involved in what was initially a joint European effort. The prospects for fast-breeder reactors have diminished since the project began eight years ago, and the political costs entailed by the fast-breeders' use of plutonium have proven fatal to the project in a Germany increasingly concerned with the environment.

Germany holds up cultivation of GM maize...
Article Abstract:
The German government has blocked commercial cultivation of genetically modified (GM) Bt maize by Novartis, a biotechnology company. It wants more research into the potential hazards. The Office for Varieties has now put its decision on licensing Novartis's Bt maize as a new variety on hold, in the wake of the government's move.
