The researchers use carbon dioxide to kill laboratory rodents as it is easy, cheap and untroubling for them. Many scientists have reported that C[O.sub.2] could cause pain and distress and hence, it might be better to use a pricier anesthetic or a manual maneuver called cervical dislocation that breaks the animal's neck.
