Determining the reproductive behaviour of individual brown-headed cowbirds using microsatellite DNA markers
Article Abstract:
Brown-headed cowbirds are brood parasitic birds which have been extensively observed, but little is known of some facets of their behavior. Evolutionary biologists are especially interested in brood-parasitic birds. Microsatellite DNA markers have been used to study these birds in Manitoba. They have been found to be predominantly mongamous, and their reproductive success varies greatly. Some females appear to specialize in single host species, and others may be generalists. There is little overlap of areas where females lay eggs. Females may be less fecund than previously thought.

Host responses to cowbirds near the nest: cues for recognition
Article Abstract:
A study of the cues that may be used by yellow warblers to recognize predatory brown-headed cowbirds shows that bill shape and vocalisation are important visual and auditory signals. Nesting female yellow warblers were found to perform more nest protection behaviour in response to a control cowbird than when confronted with an experimental bird with a starling's bill. The warblers also showed little response to sparrow song, while responding strongly to male and female cowbird vocalization.

Host use and fecundity of individual female brown-headed cowbirds
Article Abstract:
Descriptions of the laying behaviors of obligate brood parasites such as the brown-headed cowbird, Molothrus ater, are presented. Field observations and genetic parentage analysis is used to describe the fecundity and laying behaviors of individual female cowbirds over six breeding seasons at Delta Marsh, Manitoba, Canada.
