Direct measurement of in situ methane quantities in a large gas-hydrate reservoir
Article Abstract:
Gas hydrates are solids that develop from the mixture of water and certain gases and are stable both at low temperatures and high pressures. Marine sediments with a supply of methane are conducive to such formation. In fact, the amount of gas hydrates hidden in oceanic sediments may be larger than any other fossil-fuel reservoir on Earth. The presence of gas hydrates in the Blake ridge in the Atlantic Ocean was investigated. Findings indicate that huge amounts of methane in the form of solid gas hydrate can be found in the region.

Gas hydrate crystals may help build reefs
Article Abstract:
Two extensive deep-water reef provinces were discovered in the Porcupine Basin, off southwest Ireland. Their ring shape suggests an axial fluid expulsion at the sea bed. Seismic profiles of the area have already identified several large deep-water carbonate mounds. The large mounds discovered in May 1997, are flanked by the Magellan reefs, and widespread twin associations of symmetric lung- or butterfly-shaped structures were observed.
