Discrimination of midday jird's odour by house mice
Article Abstract:
Midday jirds and house mice co-exist in the grassland habitats in the Northern Caspian lowlands. However, the house mice avoid areas where the jirds habitate. To test the mechanisms of such segregation, a study was conducted on three types house mice, feral, commensal and third-generation mice from a laboratory colony of feral parents. Results showed that feral mice avoided the jird's odor while the commensal and third-generation mice were indifferent. The results indicated that inter-species behavior was odor mediated and that intraspecific avoidance of mice is learned and not innate.
