Disturbance of the seabed by mobile fishing gear: a comparison to forest clearcutting
Article Abstract:
Bottom trawling and other mobile fishing gear resemble forest clearcutting. Not only do they damage biological diversity , they also threaten economic sustainability. They crush, bury, and expose marine animals and structures in the sea, reducing structural diversity. Their impact is global because recovery after disturbance is slow and growth takes years and in some cases decades.

Beta Diversity and Nature Reserve System Design in the Yukon, Canada
Article Abstract:
A geographic information system was used to determine disturbance sensitivity among mammals in Canada's Yukon Territory. Compositional turnover and regional heterogeneity were found to be significant predictors of the protected areas required to represent mammals in each ecoregion, and the usefulness of this method to future conservation planning efforts is discussed.

Effects of habitat disturbance and protected areas on mammals of Peninsular Malaysia
Article Abstract:
Research on seven separate locations in Malaysia indicates that natural forest areas are the primary factor affecting mammal populations. The size of the remaining forest areas determined the survival of larger herbivores and carnivores, and variations in habitat quality corresponded with differences in mammal populations.
