Access law threat to medical merger
Article Abstract:
The decision by the California state senate to approve two bills which would require the medical facilities of the University of California at San Francisco and Stanford University to make all information about the use of public funds available to the public may prove a barrier to the planned merger of these facilities. However, there are indications that the two institutions may now be prepared to agree to a compromise on this issue. The merger will still present many challenges, including the very large differences in clinical faculty size and clinical emphasis.

Budget hits 'political' research funded by tobacco tax
Article Abstract:
A rule passed during California State budget negotiations prohibits the use of tobacco tax research funds for partisan research. Opponents of the rule are concerned that any research critical of the tobacco industry will be labeled partisan and so not funded. The research plans will be subject to review by the State Department of Finance with the aid of the Tobacco Education and Research Oversight Committee to eliminate all hints of partisan political activity.
