Forest fires cause pollution crisis in Asia
Article Abstract:
Smoke from forest fires burning out of control in Indonesia has enveloped many neighbouring countries and raised air pollution levels, causing the Malaysian government to declare a state of emergency in Sarawak. The fires have been intensified by lack of rain in the region. Indonesia's prime minister has apologized for the environmental catastrophe and the government has banned forestry companies and plantation owners from slash-and-burn activities, but this has served to increase the number of new fires as companies seek to clear forests before the ban comes into effect.
