Do vervet monkey infants cry wolf?
Article Abstract:
A study of six groups of free ranging vervet monkeys in Kenya's National Park revealed the developmental changes in the effectiveness of the vervet infants' begging or distress calls. The mothers appeared to respond less to the infants' distress calls in situations where their attention was needed the most. The relationship between call rate and effectiveness was influenced by the availability of resources, chances of survival, future reproductive success and habitat quality. The mothers did not always rely on care elicitation calls as they were easy to produce and did not correctly indicate the infants condition.

Life beyond the mirror: a reply to Anderson & Gallup
Article Abstract:
The comments made by Anderson & Gallup (1997) on the mirror test results on cotton-top tamarins do not detract from the implications drawn from them. It seems that they have misunderstood several critical features of the experiment that claims self-recognition in cotton-top tamarins. The suggestion that the logic of experimental design has been misunderstood is erroneous and the main conclusion of the original experiment stands.

Sensory biases underlie sex differences in tamarin long call structure
Article Abstract:
The tamarin combination long call (CLC), a species-specific vocalization consisting of one to two chirps followed by three to four whistles, that functions in the context of social isolation and mate attraction is highlighted. CLCs produced by males have significantly shorter whistles than those produced by females, although there is some overlap in the sex-specific ranges.
