Doors open in the private sector
Article Abstract:
The increase in employment opportunities for foreign scientists in the Japanese public sector has been duplicated in Japanese corporations. Among the leading employers of foreign researchers are Sony Corp and Toshiba Corp. To entice foreigners to relocate to Japan, these companies offer attractive compensation schemes. Salaries range from 4 million yen ($36,000) per year to 9 million yen ($81,000) per year. Foreigners who wish to seek permanent employment in Japan are advised to select the most appropriate company which can meet their needs and expectations.

What frontiers for Frontier?
Article Abstract:
The Human Frontier Science Program, a Japan-sponsored initiative to foster international cooperation in research on the brain and biomolecular mechanisms, derives its philosophical rationale from the Japanese idea of combining science with technology. The Japanese have traditionally combined theoretical science with practical engineering rather than regarding the two as separate as the Europeans did. Hence the Frontier seeks to promote biological research in the widest possible variety of disciplines through such means as the awarding of research grants.

Human frontiers in rough water
Article Abstract:
A public controversy has developed over whether the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) should pursue mundane or boldly innovative and interdisciplinary projects. HFSP is an international research effort initiated by the Japanese and headquartered in Strasbourg, France. HFSP secretary general Sir James Gowans and HFSP council of management chairman Edward Rall are criticizing a Japanese professor, Akiyoshi Wada, for publicly urging them in a 1992 Nature article to return to the imaginative spirit in which the Japanese originally conceived of HFSP.
