EU helps to save science jobs in Berlin
Article Abstract:
The European Union is providing 10.6 million US dollars to retrain sixty molecular scientists from east Berlin, Germany. Many of the scientists work at the Max Delbruck Centre for Molecular Medicine. Without the retraining scheme the scientists would be unemployed. Hundreds of others are in a less fortunate position now that support programmes of this kind have been stopped in Germany. The scientists will take a cut in pay while they train over a three year period.

Bavarian universities set to gain autonomy
Article Abstract:
Bavarian universities in Germany will be allowed to run autonomously in accordance with changes in German law. Professorship appointments, budget control and university research programmes at ten establishments will no longer be overseen by the government. Instead, a Hochschulrat governing body is to be appointed in an advisory capacity. Increased funding from the private sector will be sought, according to university representatives.
