A panel chaired by John Travers, CEO of the government's advisory board on industrial development, science and technology was set up by Irish Minister for Commerce, Science and Technology Pat Rabbitte. The panel will implement some of the 160 recommendations made by the Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (STIAC) after reviewing science in Ireland. The report, which emphasizes technology and its use in industry, is expected to be implemented by the end of 1995. The report submitted by STIAC requires 25 million Irish pounds over five years and an 82 million Irish pounds budget increase over 1993.

Berlin university protests at bid to cut science faculties
Article Abstract:
The city government of Berlin, Germany, has asked Humboldt University to shoulder half of the 33-million-mark budget cut that the city is planning for its three universities. The university agreed only to a cut of 11 million marks and protested against the suggestion by Munich science minister Manfred Erhardt to reduce its natural sciences faculties. The city has been having budget difficulties because the subsidies from the federal government has stopped at a time when they are most needed for the reconstruction of Berlin's eastern sector.
