Ecologists row over lobbying strategy
Article Abstract:
Controversy has arisen in the US over a letter signed by the presidents of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology and eight other scientific organizations. The letter, which ran as an advertisement in the New York Times in Feb 1998, calls for a total ban on the killing of any endangered animal or plant. This would include incidental takes allowed for landowners who submit habitat conservation plans. This approach has been criticized by biologist Frances James, who with a number of colleagues believes that a blanket opposition to incidental takes is not scientifically valid.

Protecting wildlife becomes endangered act
Article Abstract:
The oncoming reauthorization of the US Endangered Species Act (ESA) by the Congress and Supreme Court could constrain the ESA's ability to protect endangered species. The Republican majority in the Congress has expressed its plans to modify the Act in the interests of private property owners more than that of wildlife. The reauthorization bill will support the granting of compensation by the government to landowners, whose property loses value due to an endangered species listing.

Biologists sound warning on species conservation
Article Abstract:
Top conservationists are concerned about proposed US Endangered Species Act changes giving property developers the right to move protected habitats from development sites using Habitat Conservation Plans (HCP). The group of conservation experts, headed by Stanford University professor Dennis Murphy, is worried that HCPs will not be carefully considered or monitored. It wants an independent review group to be set up to overview HCPs.
