Effectiveness of dense nesting cover for increasing duck production in Saskatchewan
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken at 31 sites in the Northern Prairie Ecozone in southern Saskatchewan into the effectiveness of dense nesting cover (DNC) as a way of boosting duck production in prairie-parkland nesting locations established that planting cultivated land to DNC boosted the nest success of mallard and gadwall but not of blue-winged teal or northern shoveler. Nest success was similar among species in DNC, and variation in nest success among species in unmanaged plots may therefore be the result of variations between species in habitat selection and vulnerability to predators.

Effectiveness of dense nesting cover for increasing duck production in Saskatchewan
Article Abstract:
The effect of dense nesting cover on duck production in Saskatchewan was investigated. A three-year study covering the period 1992-1994 in the parkland of southern Saskatchewan was conducted for this purpose and to analyze duck usage of dense nesting cover. Another objective was to determine whether establishment of dense nesting cover increased the nest success rates than those in unmanaged areas. The implications of the findings for wildlife management were discussed.

Grassland birds nesting in haylands of southern Saskatchewan: Landscape influences and conservation priorities
Article Abstract:
The relative nest abundance and success of grassland nesting birds in hayland is quantified to determine the benefits to grassland birds of converting cropland to hayland in southern Saskatchewan. Nests of 26 species of grassland nesting birds, primarily waterfowl and vesper sparrow are founded.
