Effects of fall hunting on wild turkey populations in Virginia and West Virginia
Article Abstract:
Eastern wild turkeys have long been hunted in the fall in West Virginia and Virginia, though the fall season ended in some parts of western West Virginia and Virginia. Fall harvests could affect the total population of turkeys. A study of turkey populations has shown that more hen turkeys may be killed through illegal hunting than legal hunting. Maximum growth of the population can be achieved through spring hunting. A short fall season can be used if allowable fall harvests are to be maximized, with longer seasons once the impact has been assessed.
