Elastocapillary coalescense in wet hair
Article Abstract:
The study investigates why wet hair clumps into bundles by dunking a model brush of parallel elastic lamellae into a perfectly wetting liquid. It concluded that when the brush, which consists of regularly spaced, flexible lamellae, is progressively withdrawn from the bath of liquid, a cascade of successive sticking events leads to a hierarchical bundling pattern.

Channel at the hair's end
Article Abstract:
A study of hair cells in the hearing and balance organs of mice that derived corroborating details from the larger cells of frogs and from genetic manipulation of zebrafish is presented. After exhaustively screening 33 mouse TRP channels, it was found that TRPA1 is expressed in hair cells only when the cells become functional mechano-transducers.

Spreading the fluid word
Article Abstract:
Elizabeth Olson has been able to make biophysical measurements indicating that three-dimensional fluid flow may have to be incorporated in a complete description of hearing. She provides an experimental view of the dynamic pressure changes in the cochlea, developing a small and sensitive hydrophone placed in the gerbil cochlea.
