Quasiparticle breakdown in a quantum spin liquid
Article Abstract:
It is shown using neutron scattering that quasiparticle breakdown can occur in a quantum magnet and, by implication, in other systems with Bose quasiparticles. The findings have important ramifications for understanding excitations with gapped spectra in many condensed matter systems, ranging from band insulators to high-transition-temperature superconductors.

Getting to the bottom of a granular medium
Article Abstract:
The penetration resistance force for an object approaching the solid bottom boundary of a granular sample is measured. The result is that the penetration resistance near the boundary increases exponentially, which demonstrates the existence of an intrinsic length scale to the 'jamming' caused by a locally applied stress.

A tale of tails
Article Abstract:
An investigation of the statistics and structure of force networks for jammed systems under compression or shear forces is presented. The force on photoelastic bottom plate is measured and the probability of a grain exerting a force of a certain magnitude in a distribution is expressed.
