Endangered species management on U.S. Air Force lands
Article Abstract:
A number of efforts are being put into the management of more than 70 rare and endangered species found on at least 45 US Air Force installations. All military nature conservation efforts are in partnership with The Nature Conservancy. The major focus is on the management of the longleaf pine and wireglass sandhills ecosystem. Other efforts focus on studying effects of overflight noise on the protected species, reintroducing red wolves into the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, and protecting the loggerhead sea turtle.

Migratory bird conservation at Fort Hood
Article Abstract:
Fort Hood in central Texas provides specialized habitat needs for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo. Golden-cheeked warblers need mixed hardwood stands made of various oak species and ash juniper while black-capped vireos need hardwood scrub habitat composed of shrubs with live and dead trees. Both populations experienced losses due to the parasitism problem caused by brown-headed cowbirds. After the implementation of a cowbird control program, both bird populations have dramatically increased.

Defending our nation and its biodiversity
Article Abstract:
Military installations throughout the US contain many rare native vegetative communities and some 220 federally listed protected species. This poses the challenge for the Dept. of Defense to comply with its legal mandate to protect these natural resources for future generations while carrying out its military mission. The department is already implementing a number of conservation programs, including bird conservation studies and the Army's Integrated Training Area Management.
