Enzyme target to latch on to
Article Abstract:
High-resolution crystal structure of a protease, insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE), has opened the door to the rational design of pharmacological modulators of the protease and also shows that it is possible to develop both inhibitors and activators. The IDE is implicated in diabetes and Alzheimer's disease and the drug molecules can be used to activate IDE by mimicking the latch-disrupting mutations.

A century-old debate on protein aggregation and neurodegeneration enters the clinic
Article Abstract:
The key experiments that led to the development of a model, known as the 'amyloid hypothesis', and also the recent experimental findings that purport to test elements of the working model are presented. The relationship between protein aggregation and neurodegeneration cannot be found out until the effects of such compounds on human disease are evaluated with the help of clinical trials.

Dogs help sniff out genes
Article Abstract:
Geneticists have used dogs for finding the genes that are responsible for physical traits. The mechanism has helped them to use the dog genome to help identify genes involved in disorders such as diabetes that also affect humans.
