Endangered species programs in the 50 states and Puerto Rico
Article Abstract:
A survey of wildlife regulation andmanagement departments in 50 states and Puerto Rico was conducted in 1991 to determine state governments' role in the protection, management and monitoring of endangered and threatened species in the US. Results revealed that in these departments, nongame staff usually outnumber those involved in work on endangered species. It was also found that 72.5% of the funding received by state endangered species program comes from federal funds and that the amount of these funds vary from state to state.

New legislation aids the recovery of endangered fish and refuge wetlands in Nevada
Article Abstract:
Public Law 101-618 was enacted to aid the restoration of the National Wildlife Refuge wetlands in Nevada and the recovery of the cui-ui and the Lahontan cutthroat trout. The problems affecting the wetlands and the two fish species were caused by the Newlands Reclamation Project. The irrigation project caused the influx of agricultural drain water into the wetlands, severely reducing its acreage and poisoning the environment. It also affected the fishes' upstream migration, which plays an important role in the fishes' spawning.

ESA amendments: the good, the bad, and the unnecessary
Article Abstract:
Several amendments to the Endangered Species Act have been proposed in Congress. While some proposals aimto strengthen the measure through increased funding and the adoption of better recovery and preservation strategies, some tend to weaken it using economic cost-benefit arguments and other tactics. To prevent the loss of benefits achieved through the act, it is imperative that concerned groups and supportersexhaust all means to educate legislators and participate in the formulation of sound environmental policies.
