Evaluation of a linked sex harvest strategy for cervid populations
Article Abstract:
Research published in 1990 by McCullough and others proposes the replacement of traditional big game management strategies with a 'black box paradigm.' As part of this, a linked sex harvest strategy (LSHS) is proposed. Recent research has looked at the ability of LSHS to determine optimum harvest of cervid populations from harvest statistics alone. It was found to be impossible to identify general conditions under which LSHS in its current form offers a reliable basis for harvest management. Big game management involving female harvests is still best undertaken on the basis of reliable information regarding the vital parameters of a population.

Evaluation of mark-resight model assumptions for estimating mountain sheep numbers
Article Abstract:
A study of the mountain sheep hard near Trickle-Mountain Colorado revealed that the mark-resight and the joint maximum likelihood estimation from hypergeometric distribution (JHE) are the best methods to estimate the number of mountain sheep, where demographic closure exists within a well-defined study area. Precision, bias, and coverage of the JHE were measured by simulating mark resight population estimation when the capture and sighting probabilities, the number of sighting occasions and the population were known.
