Expensive space crystal programme has produced little of scientific value, says panel
Article Abstract:
The US National Research Council (NRC) report has stated that space experiments in protein crystal growth have not yet yielded any important results. However the research facilities may be used to determine whether or not crystal growth in zero gravity is worthwhile. Two years ago, the American Society for Cell Biology called for NASA's microgravity research programme to be scrapped.

Emphasis of NASA's microgravity research shifts to space biology
Article Abstract:
NASA has refocused its microgravity research programme on the biological sciences instead of on space-grown crystal research. As part of this move, the Office of Life and Microgravity Sciences and Applications has been restructured and renamed the Office of Biological and Physical Research.

Panel to propose shake-up for NASA labs
Article Abstract:
A draft report of a panel reviewing the 12 research centers controlled by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) proposes that duplication of research should be avoided by consolidation of research work and that research work should be transferred to industry and universities. The report does not, however, call for the closure of NASA's research centers, remaining evasive about which centers should be cut or transferred. The report emphasizes the coordination and cooperation among research centers.
