FDA turns down moratorium demand on xenotransplants
Article Abstract:
The US Food and Drug Administration is in favour of continuing cautiously with clinical trials of xenotransplantation. It has rejected calls from a group of xenotransplant scientists to impose a moratorium on these trials, stating that more time is required to identify the potential dangers. Those opposed to a moratorium argue that US authorities have held a number of public debates about the advantages and disadvantages of xenotransplantation, including ethnical matters. These debates are reflected in guidelines for those undertaking xenotransplantation issued by the Public Health Service in Sep 1996.

Scientists split on US smallpox decision
Article Abstract:
The Clinton administration announced plans to preserve one of the two stores of live smallpox virus at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, saying that the live virus is necessary to develop antiviral medicines and novel vaccines. However this has refueled a dispute amongst scientists and public-health officials about the best way to deal with stores of the virus. There are arguments that the risks of maintaining the stock outweigh any potential scientific benefits.
