Finding the emerging strategy for endangered species recovery
Article Abstract:
Any ideal agreement concerning conservation of endangered species will need to be controlled by citizen-based management groups to decide on the basic obligation of landowners, advise on improvement of habitat, and collect funds to buy credits from landowners. Laws, regulations, organizations, customs and ethics are the factors that control voluntary agreements with private landowners. Both formal and informal agreements are affected by the degree and the type of affiliation and ability to ascertain the results. Case studies are discussed using ethnographic, economic and ecological data.

As goes the prairie dog ... so goes the ferret
Article Abstract:
The decline in the prairie dog population, due to loss of prairies to agriculture and other diseases, has affected the recovery of the black-footed ferret. Ferrets depend on prairie dogs for food and shelter. Reintroduction of the captively bred ferrets at the Montana and South Dakota sites has been more successful than that at the Wyoming site, probably due to dense black-tail prairie dog populations at the former sites. Prairie dogs are valuable to the ecology, as they provide food and habitat to a number of species and help in maintaining the long-term viability of prairie soils.

The case of forest carnivores: small packages, big worries
Article Abstract:
Wildlife conservation groups have strengthened their efforts to prevent the extinction of the forest carnivores, also called 'furbearers,' from destructive human activities. These carnivores, which include the Canadian lynx, wolverine, fisher and American marten, are found across forested regions in North America, Eurasia, Alaska and eastern Canada. Projects that have been launched to increase awareness on the threat faced by these species include the establishment of wildlife management programs and legislations that address the protection of forest carnivores.
