From competition to collaboration
Article Abstract:
The Rad52 protein converts the competition between two proteins needed for genetic recombination into beneficial collaboration. There has been a range of research in this field. One piece of research indicates that joint molecule formation does not take place when human Rad51 is present at subsaturating amounts. However, joint molecule formation takes place efficiently when single-stranded DNA is preincubated with human Rad52, followed by the sequential addition of subsaturating amounts of human Rad51 and double-stranded DNA. It seems that human Rad52 boosts the cooperativity of human Rad51 binding to single-stranded DNA, thus making discontinuous stretches of Rad51 on single-stranded DNA into a single functional contiguous filament.

Mammalian Cry1 and Cry2 are essential for maintenance of circadian rhythms
Article Abstract:
Cry1 and cry2 mutant mice have been generated through gene targeting in embryonic stem cells in order to investigate the biological function of mammalian Cry1 and Cry2. In mice lacking both proteins exposed to normal light/dark cycles, there is still an essentially 24-hour circadian rhythm, suggesting that the biological clock may still receive a light input. However, double-mutant mice moved to a dark/dark regime show strong circadian arrhythmicity. This indicates that there is no internal circadian clock operating with any strong momentum. Cry proteins thus appear to be clock components.

Ageing nucleus gets out of shape
Article Abstract:
Several degenerative disorders are linked to defects in proteins that maintain the shape and organization of the nucleus, indicating that deterioration in nuclear design may underlie some features of ageing. To find out the effect of deterioration of nuclear design on normal ageing, experiments were carried out on animals which showed similar deteriorating nuclear architecture during normal ageing, confirming the notion that genome instability underlies ageing.
