Scaling behaviour in the growth of companies
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the statistical properties of corporate growth rates. Data on US manufacturing publicly traded companies for the period 1975-1991 were obtained from the Compustat database. Results showed that the distribution of annual growth rates takes an exponential form for companies with similar sales. Results also indicated that organizational structures common to all companies are better determinants of growth than production-related factors.
