A regulator of transcriptional elongation controls vertebrate neuronal development
Article Abstract:
Research is presented describing how neuronal development of vertebrates is controlled by a transcriptional elongation regulator. The research describes the mutant foggy , which is a brain-enriched nuclear protein that is related in structure to the Spt5 transcription elongation factor, in zebrafish.

The tumour-suppressor gene patched encodes a candidate receptor for Sonic hedgehog
Article Abstract:
The tumour-suppressor gene, patched (Ptc), is a receptor for the protein Sonic hedgehog (Shh). Shh binds to cells expressing Ptc with high affinity. Ptc, Shh and a vertebrate homologue of the Drosophila protein Smoothened (vSmo) form a physical protein complex. vSmo coexpresses with vPtc in a number of tissues. However, it fails to bind Shh directly. vPtc is a legend-binding component, and vSMo is a signalling component that is linked to Ptc. Genetic mutations causing unstability of Ptc protein are associated with basal cell carcinoma.

Activating smoothened mutations in sporadic basal-cell carcinoma
Article Abstract:
Basal-cell carcinomas (BCCs) are a common form of human cancer. Identification of PATCHED gene mutations gave an insight into their genesis. Normal inhibition by PTCH of Smoothened (SMO) is thought to be prevented by the binding of Sonic hedgehog (SHH) to its PTCH receptor. Activating somatic missense mutations in the SMO gene have been identified in sporadic BCCs from three patients. The role of SMO as a signalling component of the SHH-receptor complex is supported.
