Geochemical constraints on mantle melting during creation of the North Atlantic basin
Article Abstract:
Major and trace elemental data for lavas which erupted during the Greenland-European continental rift which occurred about 60 Myr ago were studied to determine how they affected melting at lower temperatures. Analysis of the data indicated that the thinning of the continental lithosphere during initial magmatism contributed to the changes. Obsevatiosn also pointed thst mantle melting was initiated in the garnet stability fields. The degree of geochemical enrichment was reduced by mdoerate melting levels during the rifting process.

Evidence from the rare-earth-element record of mantle melting for cooling of the Tertiary Iceland plume
Article Abstract:
Studies have focused on similarities in the thermal and chemical structure of the Tertiary and current-day plumes, arguing for stability of the mantle anomaly. Some authors assume that the plume was rift-centered throughout its history. Compositional data for flood basalts in east Greenland near to the inferred plume axis, is reported. Limits are placed on the pressures and extents of mantle melting, and show that the mantle was initially moderately hot. This is difficult to reconcile with current plume-head models.

Seismic evidence that the source of the Iceland hotspot lies at the core-mantle boundary
Article Abstract:
There is continued debate about the origin of plumes, although evidence of plumes in the upper mantle is emerging. The presence of a localized area of material with ultra-low seismic wave speed has been detected at the core-mantle boundary below the Iceland hotspot. It is suggested that the zone may be the hot, partly molten source of the Iceland mantle plume. The seismic velocity structure of the area was modelled using a numerical-analytical interfacing code.
