German professors appeal their dismissals in purge of thousands with ties to Stasi
Article Abstract:
Many German university professors are contesting the decision to fire them because of their links to the Communist regime that ruled East Germany until Nov 1989. State reunification commissions recommended the firings because the academics cooperated with the Stasi, the East German secret police, or used their Communist affiliation to control the careers of rivals. The discharged academics, including the University of Leipzig's Armin Ermisch and Wolf-Dietrich Arnold, are disputing the dismissals on the grounds that private vendettas motivated some of the witnesses against them.

Plea for female academics in Germany
Article Abstract:
The German science council, the Wissenschaftsrat, argues that German universities should be rewarded for employment and recruitment policies geared to boosting numbers of women academics. Men are especially dominant among German academics, and the long qualifying period for a university post tends to deter women. An emphasis on postdoctoral fellowships could help attract more women. More women academics than men lost their jobs in eastern Germany after reunification, and women from eastern Germany were hit by cutbacks in childcare facilities.

Post-war ideals trip over modern reality: Pressures are mounting to bring in radical reforms to German universities to reduce bureaucracy and give a boost to scientific research
Article Abstract:
The university system in Germany has been adversely affected by the decentralization of political responsibility for cultural and educational issues. Student numbers have risen, but the rise has not been matched by the rise in staff numbers, and university research has also suffered. There is concern too that there are a deep flaws in the academic structure of many universities, with professors holding too much power, and too few opportunities for young scientists.
