Germany stumbles on enacting plan to integrate eastern scientists
Article Abstract:
East German scientists were thrown into limbo following the collapse of the Berlin Wall and reunification of Germany. To create a leaner research system with fewer personnel, research institutes were closed and university professors were terminated from their jobs. An additional 2,000 of those who were promised teaching positions in the united Germany were left without jobs when universities turned them down. Even the reintegration program called Wissenschaftler-Integrationsprogramm did not bring about a smoother transition.

Germany debates proper niche for blue-list institutes
Article Abstract:
The German public is currently debating the place of so called blue-list institutes in the research community. This list of government subsidized institutes have grown after the German reunification and some sectors are now questioning the validity of its existence. The universities, the Max Planck Society and national research centers believe that this trend is impractical in the midst of economic difficulties. Moreover, it goes against government policy of shifting research towards the universities.
