The effect of intravenous infusion of urea on urea recycling and the site of urea secretion into the gastrointestinal tract
Article Abstract:
A study was done on the effects of intravenous infusion of urea on urea recycling and the site of urea secretion into the gastrointestinal tract of four gilts. Results show an increase in plasma urea concentration, urea pool size and entry, urea excretion and degradation with intravenous infusion of urea. There is a low percentage of recycling because of urea's excretion in the urine. A study of urea metabolism in the gastrointestinal tract showed that the upper digestive tract is the main site of urea metabolism in pigs and that its secretion from plasma into the large intestine is insignificant.

The effect of starch infusion at the distal ileum on urea recycling and bacterial nitrogen excretion
Article Abstract:
A study was done to determine the effects of starch infusion at the distal ileum on urea recycling and bacterial nitrogen excretion. Results of the study show that continuous infusion of starch stimulates microbial fermentation which decreases the amount of endogenous urea recycled in the gastrointestinal tract. Nitrogen balance is unaffected because ammonia is synthesized into bacterial protein and reduced urinary nitrogen excretion compensates for increased fecal nitrogen excretion.

15N-leucine and 15N-isoleucine isotope dilution techniques versus the 15N-isotope dilution technique for determining the recovery of endogenous protein and amino acids in digesta collected from the distal ileum in pigs
Article Abstract:
Three isotope dilution techniques which detect endogenous nitrogen in pigs were compared. The 15N-isotope dilution technique was the most sensitive for determining the recovery of endogenous protein in the distal ileum digesta as compared with the 15N-leucine and 15N-isoleucine dilution techniques. This was verified by measuring the 15N-enrichment excess in total nitrogen, leucine, and isoleucine in the trichloroacetic-soluble fractioon of the blood and in ileal digesta.
