Gloom deepens for Australian researchers
Article Abstract:
Researchers in Australia are in for a dismal phase as the country's science and technology budget is downsized by 5.1% in real terms. The reduction is in response to reduced tax incentives for industrial research and development. While the cut has invited criticism from business circles, a nearly similar reduction in operating costs for universities has instigated widespread protests. The country's premier research agencies will have to make do with reduced funds, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization may take the asset-sale route to generate optimum funds.

Free market is advocated for Australian universities
Article Abstract:
Radical recommendations have been made in a report reviewing Australia's financing policy for higher education. A panel, headed by retired head teacher Roderick West, advocates that the 37 universities be completely open to market forces, via deregulation and tuition fees. The report has been criticised for not including a financial analysis of the impact of such proposals.
