From bench to bedside ... research makes the translational transition
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly widely recognized that clinical medical training in the UK, although it produces good doctors, fails to provide sufficient numbers of clinically qualified researchers. Many large pharmaceutical companies are finding it difficult to recruit enough researchers to deal with the discovery of new compounds in early clinical development. Some observers feel that there is a need for specific, flexible training for clinical scientists, with such people having the same status as those who have undergone the longer training process and then work as non-research physicians.

Flexibility the key for neuroscientists
Article Abstract:
A 1995 report by the National Academy of Sciences reveals various career options for neuroscientists. The number of scientists employed in business and industry is rising as compared to academic employment in the fields of medical and biological sciences. Education in its early stages should prepare students for diverse job options. Improved career guidance and use of information systems, such as the Internet, may help in creating a stable job market. Funding of multidisciplinary research by various private organizations may prove to be useful.

The world of the postdoc
Article Abstract:
There is an increasing number of postdoctoral students who are unable to find permanent employment in academic research. Potential employers prefer multidisciplinary research experience or a dual master's degree because they foster a broader view than a postdoctoral degree. Academic institutions are adjusting their PhD. training programs to meet the needs of the job market. The students should increase their skills in technical writing, statistical analysis and scientific presentations. The Internet is a useful tool for this purpose.
