Goldenseal: facing a hidden crisis
Article Abstract:
The wild goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), a perennial belonging to the buttercup family, is in danger of extinction. Because of its medicinal properties, the goldenseal is commonly used as an ingredient in various pharmaceutical products. The consequent heavy trade in this species has contributed to habitat loss and population decline in North America. It has already been listed in Appendix II of the Convention and International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Botanists continue to study cultivation and conservation education techniques for the wild goldenseal.

Swainson's hawk gains new protection
Article Abstract:
An international effort led by the Fish and Wildlife Service's Office of International Affairs aims to protect the threatened Swainson's hawk (Buteo swainsoni) in North America. The conservation project was launched in response to the deaths of the birds of prey caused by the pesticide monocrotophos. The Office of International Affairs is collaborating with agencies in Argentina to prevent further hawk deaths by launching an education campaign on the proper use of monocrotophos.
