Growth differentiation factor-9 is required during early ovarian folliculogenesis
Article Abstract:
An examination of ovaries from growth differentiation factor-9 (GDF-9)-deficient female mice reveals that primordial and primary one-layer follicles can be formed. However, there is a hindrance in follicular development beyond the primary one-layer follicle stage leading to complete infertility. Oocyte growth and zona pellucida formation occur normally, but not some aspects of oocyte differentiation. Results suggest that GDF-9 is needed in sustaining the growth and differentiation status of the follicle after the primary one-layer follicle stage.

Cardiac defects and altered ryanodine receptor function in mice lacking FKBP12
Article Abstract:
Mutant mice deficient in FKBP12, a cis-trans prolyl isomerase that binds the immunosuppressants FK506 and rapamycin, were generated using embryonic stem cell technology in order to define the functions of FKBP12 in vivo. Lipid bilayer experiments showed that lack of FKBP12 changes the single-channel properties of both cardiac RyR2 and skeletal RyR1. It is not possible for FKBP12.6 to functionally replace FKBP12. These defects could play a role in the cardiac phenotype in FKBP12-deficient mice.

Functional analysis of activins during mammalian development
Article Abstract:
Mice with mutations in activin-beta A or in beta A and beta A are generated to investigate the function of mammalian activins in vivo. The activins are known to be dimeric members of the transforming growth superfamily. They are widely expressed during the development of murine. The activin is essential for the survival and complete development of an individual animal.
