Spotted owl demography in the central Sierra Nevada
Article Abstract:
Research describing the status of the California spotted owl is presented. The studies indicate a 5.2% population decline for the period 1990-1999 in the central Sierra Nevada.

Habitat composition and configuration around Mexican spotted owl nest and roost sites in the Tularosa Mountains, New Mexico
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken around Mexican spotted owl nest and roost sites in the Tularosa Mountains in New Mexico compared habitat composition and configuration between areas used by these owls and areas available to them. It was found that the owls occupied sites with more mature mixed-conifer and mature pine than would be anticipated on the basis of the availability of these classes. This indicates that Mexican spotted owls select territories partly on the basis of the area of mature forest present. Indices of habitat configuration were not different between owl and random plots.

Habitat composition and configuration around Mexican spotted owl nest and roost sites in the Tularosa Mountains, New Mexico
Article Abstract:
A vegetation map derived from Landsat Thematic Mapper digital imagery and digital elevation models was used to evaluate habitat composition and configuration around owl sites in the Tularosa Mountains in New Mexico. Results revealed that owls occupied sites with more mature mixed-conifer and mature pine and less pinyon-juniper than random sites. There was no difference found in the amount of young forest between owl and random sites. No difference was likewise seen in the mean patch size, edge distance, mean nearest neighbor distance, mean shape index and habitat heterogeneity following correction for the area of the vegetation classes within owl territories.
