Habitat use and reproductive success of western snowy plovers at new nesting areas created for California least terns
Article Abstract:
A number of management issues must be taken into account when developing mitigation plans that include habitat improvement for snowy plovers. This research aimed to establish whether snowy plovers used new areas created for least terns at Batiquitos Lagoon, San Diego County, CA. It also sought to quantify reproductive success and site fidelity to new breeding and wintering areas. It is vital that resource managers are aware of the impact of predation on survival of snowy plovers, particularly chicks. Loss of appropriate habitat for wintering and migrating snowy plovers has probably contributed to the overall decline in coastal populations.

Habitat selection and productivity of least terns on the lower Platte River, Nebraska
Article Abstract:
Habitat selection and productivity of least terns on the lower Platte River in Nebraska were studied to show the factors surrounding their habitat selection and if estimated productivity can support them. Findings show that terns were not partial to one site over another. Although most of the terns studied stayed on the sandpit sites than on the river, the proportion of available sand used did not vary between habitats. Productivity varied among sites but not between habitats. Local productivity is not enough for support unless yearly postfledging survival is higher than current estimates.

Status of the interior population of least tern
Article Abstract:
The interior population of the least tern was on the endangered list in 1985 because of its low numbers and threats to its breeding habitat. A new study is designed to provide information that will help manage this population. Estimates of tern numbers compiled between 1986 and 1995 are compared to the objectives outlined in the Recovery Plan for the interior least tern population. The study finds that least tern numbers appear to have increased since 1980, with the overall population trend being positive. However, significant negative trends are detected in Iowa and Oklahoma.
