Herbicide resistance caused by spontaneous mutation of the cytoskeletal protein tubulin
Article Abstract:
Dintroaniline herbicides have been used for pre-emergence weed control in soybean, cotton, rape and wheat since 1973. However, prolonged use of chemicals, such as ethalfluralin and pendimethalin, has resulted in some goosegrass biotypes in the cotton fields of Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama becoming dinitroaniline resistant. A new study identifies the molecular basis of this resistance as a point mutation in the cytoskeletal protein alpha-tubulin.

Structure of the alpha-beta tubulin dimer by electron crystallography
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to develop an atomic model of the alpha-beta tubulin heterodimer fitted to a 3.7 angstrom density map produced by electron crystallography of zinc-induced tubulin sheets. The monomer structure of alpha- and beta-tubulin is very compact, but can be separated into three functional domains. These are GTP-binding, drug-binding and motor/MAP-binding domains. There is very tight interaction between the domains.

Simple rules with complex outcomes
Article Abstract:
Decisions regarding the implementation of crop protection programs through weed control are usually influenced by threshold population density. However, studies conducted by van Oijen and Wallinga indicate that the selection of an appropriate threshold level does not affect the need for weed control in the long-run. Studies should instead focus on preventive weed management.
