High-speed testbeds herald new Net era
Article Abstract:
The Supercomputing 95 conference held in San Diego in Dec 1995, demonstrated the power of the future network system, the I-WAY system. The system uses engineering to connect high-speed networks such as the very high-speed Backbone Network Service of the US. The linking of supercomputers by the I-WAY system will enhance the capabilities of the system tremendously allowing rapid interactive explanatory research. Tom DeFanti, the inventor of I-WAY system, believes that it will help in developing the high-performance scientific computing.

Primate study may yield new CJD clues...
Article Abstract:
A Franco-American research team including staff from the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the University II of Montpellier, France, has confirmed an oral route of transmission for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). In primates, BSE seems to pass through the digestive tract, across the spleen and up the spinal cord into the brain. The fact that primates seem to be easily infected orally with BSE could have implications for research into the new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.
