High-throughput screening for drug discovery
Article Abstract:
An increase in the number of protein targets for potential drug treatment and the chemical compounds that can be tested against these targets has led to the utilization of high-throughput screening (HTS) in drug discovery. HTS requires arrayed compound libraries, a configured assay for automation, and a computer workstation and data handling system. It fails to identify drugs and evaluate their bioavailability, pharmacokinetics, toxicity and the absolute specificity of the drug. However, it helps in the detection and optimization of lead compounds.

Regulation of skeletal muscle mass in mice by a new TGF-beta superfamily member
Article Abstract:
Growth/differentiation factor-8 (GDF-8), a new murine TGF-beta family member, has been identified by using degenerate polymerase chain reaction. This is expressed only in developing and adult skeletal muscle. Research based on gene targeting in mice indicates that GDF-8 acts specifically as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle growth. In particular, loss of GDF-8 function produces a significant increase in skeletal muscle mass.

Inhibitory and activating functions for MAPK Kss1 in the S. cerevisiae filamentous-growth signalling pathway
Article Abstract:
Research shows that the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) Ste7 in the yeast Saccaromyces cerevisiae targets the MAPK target Kss1 during invasive growth. Experiments establish that Kss1 inhibits invasive growth when it is in its inactive form. Ste7 stimulates invasive growth by causing Kss1 to become active. Nitrogen plays a key role in MAPK-independent and MAPK-dependent growth patterns.
