Hydrogen cars fuel debate on basic research
Article Abstract:
President Bush's $1.7 billion, five-year FreedomCAR program to develop hydrogen-powered cars so far has involved industry, but not academic researchers. D aniel Sperling of the University of California (Davis) points out that the basic science underlying hydrogen cars is "very weak", although over a dozen universities have fuel cell research programs. Malcolm Weiss of the Massachusetts In stitute of Technology points out that separating hydrogen from natural gas could generate as much greenhouse gas emissions as petroelum fuels do, and transporting the hydrogen to gasoline stations will be difficult.

Making a natural fuel cell
Article Abstract:
Hydrogenases are enzymes that are exquisite miniature hydrogen fuel cells and helps in metabolizing hydrogen with high efficiency. Based on a combination of sulphur and iron atoms, a close analogue of the active site of all-iron hydrogenase, which can be synthesized in the laboratory, produce hydrogen in an electrochemical cell, given a supply of protons and electrons.
