Hyperlocomotion and indifference to cocaine and amphetamine in mice lacking the dopamine transporter
Article Abstract:
Homozygote mice devoid of the dopamine transporter (DAT) protein show spontaneous hyperlocomotion, and are unaffected by treatment with the psychostimulants cocaine and amphetamine. DAT is the main factor controlling the neurotransmission of dopamine (DA) and is acted upon by psychostimulants. In its absence, DA persists in the extracellular spaces for a long time although there is a decrease in the amount of D1 and D2 receptors, which are involved in dopamine (DA) responsiveness and enzymes controling DA synthesis. DA controls motor activity, cognition and affect.

Dissociation of dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens from intracranial self-stimulation
Article Abstract:
Research into dopamine release from dopamine terminals in the nucleus accumbens core and shell in the brain has involved monitoring extracellular dopamine in the nucleus accumbens during transient intracranial self-stimulation (ICS) of the ventral tegmental area/substantia nigra. The results obtained were consistent with evidence that the dopaminergic element is not linked with the hedonistic aspects of reward. Dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens seems to be linked with novelty, predictability or some other element of the reward process.

Subsecond dopamine release promotes cocaine seeking
Article Abstract:
The dopamine present in the nucleus accumbens is measured to investigate the role of phasic dopamine signaling. Rapid changes in extracellular dopamine concentration were observed at key aspects of drug-taking behavior in rats by some analyzes using electrochemical technology.
