Individual differences in parental care and behaviour profile in the convict cichlid: a correlation study
Article Abstract:
Behavioural inhibition and shyness may not be related to aggressiveness in the convict cichlid, Cichlasoma (Archocentrus) nigrofasciatum, according to research designed to established whether individual differences in patterns of parental care are connected with individual differences in situations involving risk, novelty and aggression in this biparental, substrate-brooding species. There was found to be a link between parental food provisioning and exploration in males and a negative correlation between provisioning and open field freezing in both sexes.

Male size, spawning pit size and female mate choice in a lekking cichlid fish
Article Abstract:
Male size, spawning pit size and female mate choice in Oreochromis mossambicus is investigated. The results showed that in the absence of male competition, female O. mossambicus preferred males which had dug larger spawning pits. Male body size did not have any significant influence on the size of the spawning pits they dug. Female O mossambicus tended to choose mates with larger body sizes.

A test of the 'challenge hypothesis' in cichlid fish: Simulated partner and territory intruder experiments
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to investigate the predictions of the challenge hypothesis in cichild fish, a rapidly evolving group with a variety of breeding systems. In order to avoid phylogenetic bias, the study compared androgen responsiveness in pairs of closely related species that differed in their prevalent mating system.
