Industrial research booms in US despite job cuts at large labs
Article Abstract:
Research managers claim that industrial research is reviving in the US, although corporate central research laboratories are being shed by large companies. Business start-ups account for much research, and are attrcting funds. Universities account for 70% of basic research in the US, and research spending has levelled off in the US, according to official data, but these data have been criticized as out of date. There are variations according to sector, and low petroleum prices may have led to a fundamental change in that industry.

Chalmers' choice: Make cuts or go under
Article Abstract:
The Natural History Museum in London has been transformed under the directorship of Neil Chalmers who took up the post in 1988. The museum has generated 18.6 million pounds sterling of its 46.3 million pounds sterling turnover itself in the past financial year. Job cuts and redeployments were involved in the transformation, but the cuts have been compensated for by the recruitment of about 100 university style postdoctoral researchers, who are financed by external agencies.

US seeks greenhouse gas cuts from the Third World
Article Abstract:
US officials proposed during the United Nations climate convention that some developing countries should start reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. The proposal has been criticized by the European Union, the Alliance of Small Island States and environmentalist groups which favor a 20 % cut in greenhouse emissions by 2005. The terms of the future protocol will be discussed on the next annual conference which will be held in Kyoto, Japan.
